A client of mine who owns a late 90's home with
a finished walkout basement that had an existing
bathroom with a tub and the usual wet bar. They
asked  me to convert this area into an
efficiency apartment so his ageing
father could live with them.

This is a view of the existing wet bar with
the common wall cut thru. That area was
a storage room before.

Top foreground beam is where  a wall with a door way was
that had created a storage room. With this
wall removed it made it possible to create a new kitchen
area. The new plumbing and electrical has been roughed in
along with the new walls with its drywall applied.
I also made a small pantry (right of photo)
for more much needed storage.

This is another view of the area with the new beam
that replaced the old wall and doorway.

We installed a laminate hardwood floor to a make
a easy to care for floor for his father.

This photo shows the new area with its cabinets installed
ready for the new counter tops. Door to the
left is to the utility room, door to the right is the
new storage pantry. We used recessed can
lights on dimmers to light the new area.
Foreground cabinet became a nice
multipurpose eating bar.

This is another view of the new kitchen area with the
peninsula  bar ready to have its counter top installed.

Finished efficiency kitchen.

Quartz counter tops installed.

Bedroom area.

This photo shows the old tub area which was not
practical for his older father to get into and use.

Photo shows the new 5 foot shower that we installed
ready for the drywall finishing.  This unit later had
safety grab bars and shower door installed. This
unit made it a lot easier for his father to use.

to the outside.

We are finding more people are using their room additions and
finish basements for uses other than the original intended purposes.
Many people are finding that as their parents age that it makes sense
to invite them to stay with them rather than putting them in a nursing
home. With proper planning both of the families can live their
private lives and still have any needed care close at hand. Another
use for these accommodations are for grown children that might want or
need to come home for a short time. In the planning of a new basement
remodel if we find that the client wants a bathroom and wet bar build
during construction (this is the best and most economical time to do this)
we suggest that they might like to replace the wet bar with a small
kitchen. This kitchen can still function as a wet bar but it also gives
 the owner the possibility
of the ability of having an efficiency
apartment or weekend guest area at a small additional cost.
